In 2020, the world was a place of unknowns for most people as we navigated the circumstances of a global pandemic, while trying to figure out a way we could safely care for our families and loved ones while continuing to function as a society. Nowhere on my mind was the thought of going blind in the midst of all of the unknown. Nevertheless, halfway through the year, I found myself blind and in a hospital being told my life will now have a new normal. I was given some informational fliers to assist me in finding aid for adjusting to this new normal. By chance, amongst all the information I was given was a flier for the National Federation of the Blind's free cane program. This was my introduction to the Federation and the empowerment the organization instills in individuals who are blind to navigate the world on our terms. While attending the many training events, social events, group meetings and conventions, I have found an amazing group of people that lovingly refer to ourselves as the Federation Family. There is really no better way to describe the type of support, acceptance, and comradery that is exchanged in the Federation than as a family. I am proud to be a member of the National Federation of the Blind and look forward to many years of membership.
